What people say about their 405 revision.

Michael (California, USA) upgraded his 405 himself. He wrote: "The amp sounded quite good before the modifications, but it seems
cleaner, clearer, and more detailed now than it was before. And, with all the electrolytics replaced, it should run for years and years. Not bad for $137 on ebay, about $50 worth of parts, and a few hours of
work putting it all together."

I have two 405s (version 1) which I upgraded following Bernd Ludwig's instructions, upgraded all electrolytic caps, replaced the input opamp with OPA604, lowered the input stage gain, upgraded the power transistors to MJ15003, etc. But, I didn't remove the current or speaker protection.

I used them to drive my two sets of Quad ESL 63 (four speakers). I compared them to a 6550 tube amp of a recent design. The modified 405s sounded better, clearer, more transparent, bigger sound stage, etc. Most importantly, the mid and treble are smooth and non-fatiguing. They are rugged, compact, and quiet.

Overall, I am very impressed with their sound and very happy to have bought them used for cheap.

Now, I am intrigued how an upgraded 405 sounds as compared to a 606 (a supposedly improved implementation of current dumping).

I am convinced an upgraded 405 sounds better than a 606. Specially in the middle and high tones.

The 405 was made by audio-fanatics, the 606 was the first Quad amp made by managers.

The only amps that can stand beside an upgraded 405 are Krell class A or Mcintosh. All above 5.000 Euro.

PS. How do you connect your ESL's? In a serial way?

The two 405s drive two independent sets of ESL 63s. Basically, there are four independent channels. But, the main speakers are on stands 18" above ground; the back speakers are on the floor just behind the main speakers at 90 degree offset from the main speakers. Thus, they create a "virtual" omni-polar sound field. They sounded amazing driven by the 405s, better than my B&W Nautilus 803 speakers driven by a tube amp.

The ESL 63s have no grills or dust covers. The input electrolystic caps have been replaced by equivalent Solen caps. The midrange transparency is a lot better without the grill and with better caps.

I used a 6DJ8-based tube preamp to drive both 405s though.

Remoging the grills from my speakers (I use Bose 901) is not an option as I have 2 young children and 2 cats as well ;-)

I'm still looking for the ideal pre-amp for the 405.

I heard good things about the Sugden pre-amps and the Quad 34.

In fact a completely neutral switch/attenuator with DACT-components might do the job.

I'm looking into it for now...
